Poem: "A Position of Defeat 2"

2.

the sun is set to stun the higher beasts,
slow on their feet and on their faces dull
my hair so thin my hairbrush scrapes the skull
i enter subway limbo to head east

the apes are playing with their new smartphone,
flashing and flicking their opposable thumb
earplugs have made so many deaf and dumb,
shoving others improves their muscle tone

a bear asleep smells of vomit and beer
a woman, elephantine thighs in heels,
tears through a fashion rag for her ideals
the ads all sneeze, g-get me out of here

the moral squalor and the mental filth
the luminous distractions we invent . . .
