"Ganymede Unfinished" Reviewed and "Asymptote" Launched

Gregory Woods reviews Ganymede Unfinished , edited by Bryan Borland as a tribute to the late John Stahle. ... It is an apt tribute to Stahle, serious and stylish; even if it is, perhaps, less selective than he might have been with some of its weaker material. The creative content gets off to a reassuringly solid start, with fine poems by Jee Leong Koh and Matthew Hittinger.... *** Yew Leong Lee launches a new journal dedicated to literary translations. Conceived in Singapore, but edited from different parts of the world, Asymptote  is now calling for submissions of translations of fiction, non-fiction, drama and poetry. From the website: Already in the lineup for our quarterly online magazine, slated for a Jan 2011 launch, are a despatch from Afghanistan, translated from the Farsi, about the plight of women in the context of the ongoing war, an essay from Japan by a noted mathematician cum essayist entitled “Literature and Mathematics”, a group of poems from Melih Cevdet And...

Pictures of a Life

A full weekend, not just action but emotion. Bob's book launch on Friday. John Stahle's memorial service on Saturday. Matthew Hittinger and Philip Clark put together a fine roster of eulogists at the LGBT center in the afternoon. John's freshman advisor at Fordham University, with whom John remained friends for 42 years, was eloquent about John's appetite for culture and gossip. OV described John's excitement over the birth of Ganymede , the gay men's art and literary journal he edited before his death. Philip read his essay on John's eye for art. EN spoke of his last evening with John. In his description of their first meeting, he mentioned that John did not look like his photograph. John did not put his own photograph on any of his websites or Facebook page. He might have thought that he did not look attractive. He might also have thought that the gay men he courted--artists and audience--want a pretty face. The stage at the memorial service was fronted ...

A Memorial for John Stahle

A memorial website has been set up for John Stahle. He was the publisher of the gay men's cultural journal Ganymede , a wonderful graphic designer, and a friend. He encouraged me to set up my own press, and designed my first full-length book of poems. He is sadly missed.

Gregory Woods reviews "Ganymede Poets One"

Gregory Woods, the professor of Gay and Lesbian Studies at Nottingham Trent University, reviews Ganymede's first anthology of poetry. Having enjoyed his book of poems Quidnunc ( review ), I am pleased by his mention: ...what impresses me here, before we even begin on the content, is the quality of the verse. Christopher Gaskins, for instance, impresses me not so much for what he says as by the way he says it in lean, sinewy, unsentimental free verse. The same might be said of Matthew Hittinger¹s syllabics and Jee Leong Koh¹s disciplined, rhyming quatrains. And there are always individual lines to take one¹s fancy: I did enjoy this sentence from R.J. Gibson¹s "On Main Street": "Like some classist / prat in a Forster novel with a boner for the help, you want a little trade."
