Cultivating the Future Voices of Asia

Singapore Unbound is launching a new literary journal next year, featuring the future voices of Asia, and you can help in two important ways.
 
We want to expand SP Blog into a full-fledged journal. We will publish a new story, essay, or poems every week for your reading pleasure. There will be exciting themed months: “Archipelago Dreaming” for works exploring the virtues of flow and circulation; and “New Religions” for works examining new spiritual relationships between us and our environments. And we will continue to hold our popular poetry and flash-fiction contests and draw your attention to the most interesting books published through our book reviews.

 We are confident of doing so because:
  1. We are already publishing some of the finest emerging Asian voices. Read for yourself the penetrating story “The Return” by Faraaz Mahomed, a clinical psychologist and human rights lawyer originally from South Africa and now based in Brooklyn. And the comical story “Romeo and Juliet” by Zhumagul Solty from Kazakhstan, translated by her fellow Kazakh writer Zaure Batayeva. And the compelling story “The Room at the Rosemary” by the Nepalese writer Muna Gurung. Discover the speculative fiction of the young, mixed, transgender writer Jie Venus Cohen in “The Hawker Centres of Atlantis.”
     
  2. We have a dynamic team of editors in place, including Marylyn Tan, the youngest winner of the Singapore Literature Prize; Sharmini Aphrodite, whose fiction has been shortlisted for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize; and the Ledbury Emerging Poetry Critic and Barbican Young Poet Maggie Wang.
 Help us launch this exciting, new literary journal. You can do so in 1 of 2 ways:
  1. Participate in our fun “Name Our New Journal” Challenge. Submit a maximum of THREE compelling names for a literary journal that publishes the most exciting and provocative poetry, fiction, and essays from diverse parts of Asia and its diasporas. The winner of the Challenge receives a Gaudy Boy book of their choice. Send your suggestion(s), along with your mailing address, to Jee at jkoh@singaporeunbound.org. 
  1. Make a generous donation so that we can pay our authors and editors. We strongly believe that, like any other workers, authors and editors should be paid for the creative work of producing and publishing imaginative and entertaining works of literature. We hope that you share our belief and will donate generously to starting the new journal. 
We will pay our contributors USD100.00 for each contribution and our editors a stipend of USD100.00 per month. In order to do so, we need to raise a sum of USD21,150.
 
USD100.00 pays for a short story or essay.
USD300.00 pays for 3 book reviews.
USD600.00 pays for the top 3 winners of our poetry contest.
USD1,200.00 pays for 1 editor’s stipend for a year.

Steven Cantor's "What Remains: the Life and Work of Sally Mann"

Sally Mann, The Perfect Tomato , 199 0 Since it is moving pictures, a film necessarily captures--produces--a process. It turns photographs into the making of photographs. It joins moments ("spots of time") into a Life. This I expected watching Cantor's documentary on Sally Mann's creation of the exhibit "What Remains." So photographs of a long-dead beloved greyhound "lead" to photographs of the Civil War battlefield of Antietam, to photographs of Mann's Virginian farm bloodied by the police killing of a runaway convict, to photographs of decomposing bodies in a forensic study site, as if each group of pictures forms an independent yet preparatory stage in the creative process. Goh Chok Tong's Visit to FCBC

I am surprised by how much this incident is affecting me. I thought I have moved past my former religious life, left it behind in Singapore, but like tin cans tied to a dog it has followed me and is rattling me. I am posting the incident, and my response to it, here on this blog, because I want to remember that the past is not yet past. When Emeritus Senior Minister of Singapore Goh Chok Tong visited Faith Community Baptist Church on 13 January during a Sunday service, Senior Pastor Lawrence Khong took the opportunity to deliver a hateful anti-gay message .
