Fiction Catch-up

I am embarrassingly behind in my reading of fiction (and poetry, and essays, and philosophy and...), and so I went to the Strand this afternoon and made a rash purchase of $80.00 worth of fiction, just to make myself feel better. What did I buy?

Ian McEwan's Atonement
Don DeLillo's The Body Artist
Faulkner's Light in August
Garcia Marquez's Love in the Time of Cholera
John Updike's Rabbit Redux (I could not find Rabbit, Run)
James Baldwin's Giovanni's Room

and because I am a good poetry citizen, I also bought poems: Charles Simic's The Voice at 3.00 A.M.. I feel so much better already.

"Love in the Time of Cholera" is utterly beautiful. Unfortunately, it does not last forever.

I've struck a blow at "Giovanni's Room" and, after that brief campaign, will turn my forces to "Cholera."

These are wonderful, especially Garcia's and Faulkner's.

Next time, don't forget Pulitzer prise winner "The Known World" - you will know why -, nor "The Island" (all over the bookshelves". I wish I could give you a Norwegian must-book (highly lyrical), but it is not yet translated.

Just returned from a month-long holiday. Been good for me, and my poetry and reading. :)

Oh.

I'm still broke, by the way. Keep going to the shops after training to buy chocolate or some other fast energy thing (and water - why doing so I don't know: it's basically worse than tap water / water from the tap, which is lovely here in Norway).

Hi James,
good to hear from you again. "The Known World" is a terrific read. I've not read "The Island." I'm also spending far too much on protein shakes. I tried to cut down costs today by ordering on-line from a wholesale place, but, after adding the shipping costs, the savings are minimal. Water from Singaporean taps is also perfectly potable, if you like the taste of chlorine.
