Poem: What We Call Vegetables: Stem

Stem

We spar, we spear
softly, secretly,
your gut. We spare

most of you
our acrid smell.
A few get us.

Asparagus, Proust
says, perfumes
my chamber pot.

As do doctors.
As do saints.
