Days: Carl Vincent

Carl Vincent

He came out of the writing class with Carl.
You don't know stress, he said, until you run
out of money, and your children
are hungry. You
go to the taxi garage, drive
for three hours,
and, with the tips,
buy something hot from the 24-hour deli.
Carl looked at the man climbing
into his black battered Ford,
and wished he had his nervous
authority.

i'll leave the comments on craft to those who know better (eg. whoever it was who commented on the 'wicked teeth' in the previous post), and just say that these portraits ring true emotionally - authority purchased with experience and observation? i found this latest one on writerly-envy so wonderfully human (though there must be pple out there who'd resent Carl's attitude - what a privilege to be able to feel that way).
